CoolSculpt vs. truSculpt

If you’re struggling with those few stubborn last pounds, you may have considered the many body sculpting treatments on the market. And for most people, the first treatment that comes to mind is CoolSculpting®.

Because it’s the most widely known (and heavily marketed), CoolSculpting and other cryotherapy treatments tend to be first on patients’ minds. Yet, even though it’s FDA-approved, CoolSculpting is often not the best choice for patients looking for assistance with weight loss, body contouring, and body sculpting.

Thankfully, there’s another FDA-approved alternative: truSculpt®!

CoolSculpting vs. truSculpt

If this is your first experience with body contouring treatments, it’s helpful to know what your options are.

At first glance, truSculpt and CoolSculpting might appear to be the same service marketed under different names. After all, permanently destroy up to 24% of targeted fat cells in multiple areas of the body. Both require multiple sessions to obtain the desired results, with 3 months between each session.

That, however, is where the similarities end.

How It Works

The biggest difference is that CoolSculpting uses cryotherapy technology, essentially freezing the fat cells until they die. truSculpt, on the other hand, uses radio frequency heat.

Aside from permanently killing targeted fat cells, radio frequency also helps tighten skin and improve the look of cellulite. As patients lose weight, a side effect commonly seen is a decrease in skin elasticity. While CoolSculpting does not assist with skin tightening, truSculpt treatments absolutely do!

Where It Works

CoolSculpting can only be applied to “pinchable areas” of the body (i.e. the abdomen, love handles, thighs and back), limiting the areas where patients are able to receive this treatment. This “pinchable” requirement also disqualifies patients with a BMI over 30.

truSculpt, on the other hand, utilizes individual applicators that can be applied to just about any area where fat cells exist. This allows a variety of additional areas to be treated, such as the upper arms and under the chin. Furthermore, it’s ideal for patients with a BMI over 30.

truSculpt is also a great option for patients with stubborn “problem areas” that seem to resist weight loss through working out alone.

Procedure & Side Effects

One major drawback to CoolSculpting treatments is that they can be extremely uncomfortable. Patients frequently report feeling numbness and/or a “pins and needles” sensation that they describe as painful. With treatments lasting up to 105 minutes, this can be extremely off-putting!

After a CoolSculpting procedure, patients often experience lingering side effects, such as numbness, redness, swelling, bruising, and pain.

By comparison, truSculpt is a significantly easier form of treatment. Despite using heat, patients report that the treatment feels like getting a hot stone massage. However, the process is much shorter than your average massage—only about 15 minutes! With minimal side effects, truSculpt patients are able to resume daily activities the same day.

Last but not least, truSculpt treatments are much more cost-effective.
